GALLIPOLI

Gallipoli is a beautiful tragic place. A landscape of lovely coves and undulating hills that saw so much blood shed during WW1 when an attacking force of British, Australians and New Zealanders were forced to dig in and hold by an initially smaller force of Turkish soldiers. Thousands died from gunfire, mortars and shelling but mainly from disease. Eventually the allies were forced to retreat and managed this with the loss of only one life. The campaign was an unmitigated disaster and is bitterly remembered in Australia and New Zealand.
