MIRAMARE CASTLE, TRIESTE, Italy

Miramare Castle was built by Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Austria in the 1850s for his wife, Charlotte of Belgium to get away from the stiffness of the Imperial Court. As he was Admiral of the Austrian Fleet it was his headquarters. In 1864 he was asked to take the Mexican throne in 1864, but during the Mexican Revolution, he was executed. Charlotte upon hearing the tragic news didn’t recover. For decades she lived shut away, split between this world and the one she couldn’t let go of. Today the castle is a museum set in lovely gardens with magnificent views over the coast towards Trieste.
